Personal items;1 per passenger, max 25 lbs (12 kg) and 14 × 11 × 7 in. Must fit under the seat. Carry-on bags;2 per passenger, max 50 lbs (23 kg) and 28 × 22 × 14 in each. On the Pacific Surfliner the limit is 28 × 22 × 11 in. Bags must fit in the overhead racks or the luggage tower. Excess carry-on items;$20 for each item over the quantity or size limits, max 2 excess bags per passenger. The fee is paid at the station, or on board if the station is unstaffed. Checked baggage;2 bags free, up to 50 lbs and 75 linear in each. 2 additional bags at $20 each, max 4 checked bags. Not available on all trains or at all stations, and not on the Auto Train. Oversized checked baggage;76–100 linear in: $20 each. Bags over 50 lbs must be repacked (boxes sold at staffed stations). Linear inches;Length + width + height Infant items;Passengers with a child under 2 may bring one extra item (stroller, car seat or diaper bag) that does not count toward the allowance. Carriages and all-terrain or multi-child strollers may have to be checked. Checked baby items: up to 50 lbs and 100 linear in, no fee. Bicycles (carry-on);Up to 50 lbs, tire width max 2 in. Reservation required on most routes, and the fee varies by route. Folding bikes under 34 × 15 × 48 in are allowed on all trains. Pacific Surfliner: up to 104 × 41 × 8.5 in with a reservation. Bicycles (checked);Up to 50 lbs and 70 × 41 × 8.5 in. $10 to check a bike in a container, and bike boxes are $15 at most staffed stations. Recumbent, tandem and other non-standard bikes cannot be boxed. Sports equipment (carry-on);General items up to 50 lbs and 28 × 22 × 14 in. Golf bags, skis and snowboards up to 50 lbs and 72 in tall. Golf bags need a reservation, and skis must be in a full-length cover. Surfboards are allowed as carry-on only on the Pacific Surfliner, max 72 in. Sports equipment (checked);General items, skis and snowboards up to 50 lbs and 75 linear in (76–100 linear in: $20). Golf bags up to 100 linear in, $10 handling fee. Surfboards and wakeboards up to 120 in (72 in on the Pacific Surfliner), $10. Musical instruments;Small: carry-on up to 28 × 22 × 14 in. Medium: $10 service fee instead of a bag. Oversize (cello, bass, tuba): up to 72 in tall, only with an extra full-fare seat. Checked: up to 50 lbs and 100 linear in. Pets;Dogs and cats only, carry-on only. Pet plus carrier max 20 lbs. Checked up to 50 lbs and 100 linear in. Free with a mobility-impaired fare and not counted toward the allowance. Name tags;A name and address tag is required on all bags Luggage services;Storage and baggage assistance at most staffed stations. Amtrak Express shipping is suspended. Firearms;Not allowed in carry-on. Allowed in checked baggage only, with restrictions. Black-powder ammunition is never allowed. Prohibited items;Gas-powered vehicles, spillable acid batteries, flammables, corrosives, knives and weapons, kayaks and canoes. Hoverboards are banned in stations.
